The biggest mistake we see is rushing Pelling. People arrive after a long drive, squeeze in every sight in one day and leave the next morning — often without ever seeing Kanchenjunga clearly. Here are three itineraries that leave room for the mountain to show itself.

All plans assume you’re staying in Pelling and hiring a local car for sightseeing. Timings are flexible — the weather has the final say.

3-day Pelling itinerary (ideal first visit)

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Drive up from Siliguri, NJP or Bagdogra (5–6 hours; see how to reach Pelling). Check in, have a late lunch and take it easy — you’ve earned it. Watch the sunset from your balcony, then an early dinner and bed. If you’re stiff from the drive, a massage at the spa is a great idea.

Day 2: Monasteries, ruins and the Skywalk

  • Sunrise: Kanchenjunga from your room or terrace.
  • Morning: Pemayangtse Monastery, then the short forest walk to Rabdentse Ruins.
  • Afternoon: Pelling Skywalk and Chenrezig Statue.
  • Evening: Stroll through Upper Pelling for momos and tea, or a bonfire back at your stay.

Day 3: Lakes and waterfalls

  • Morning: Drive to Khecheopalri Lake (about 34 km), the sacred wishing lake.
  • Midday: Kanchenjunga Falls and Rimbi Waterfall on the way back.
  • Evening: Relax — you’ll leave early the next morning.

5-day Pelling itinerary (relaxed)

Follow the 3-day plan, then add:

Day 4: Yuksom — Sikkim’s first capital

Visit Yuksom, where the first Chogyal of Sikkim was crowned in 1642 at Norbugang. Walk to Dubdi Monastery (established 1701 and considered the oldest in Sikkim) — about an hour’s uphill walk — and see the peaceful Kathok Lake. Return to Pelling by evening.

Day 5: Singshore Bridge and a slow afternoon

Morning trip to Singshore Bridge, often called the highest bridge in Sikkim at about 100 metres above the gorge. Spend the afternoon at your resort: a long lunch, a spa treatment, a book on the balcony.

7-day Pelling itinerary (deep and slow)

Follow the 5-day plan, then add:

Day 6: Sanga Choeling and village walks

Early morning walk up to Sanga Choeling Monastery (founded 1697), one of Sikkim’s oldest, through forest and prayer flags. Afternoon village walk past cardamom fields and terraced farms. Read more in our monasteries in Pelling guide.

Day 7: Your day

Keep a free day — for a second attempt at a clear Kanchenjunga sunrise, for rain, or for doing nothing at all. On a week-long trip, this is the day people remember.

Combining Pelling with Darjeeling or Gangtok

Many travellers pair Pelling with Darjeeling (about 4 hours away) or Gangtok (about 5 hours). Put Pelling in the middle of your trip and give it at least two nights. See Pelling vs Gangtok vs Darjeeling for a sample loop.

Itinerary tips

  • Do mountain things early. Mornings are usually clearest.
  • Keep monastery visits respectful: modest dress, walk clockwise, ask before photographing inside.
  • Monsoon travel: add a buffer day for possible landslide delays.
  • Book cars through your hotel for fair rates and drivers who know the roads.
  • Check the season: our best time to visit Pelling guide explains what to expect month by month.
