By train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is your railhead
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri, which is well connected to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other cities. From NJP, you can hire a private taxi straight to Pelling, or take a shared jeep. Shared jeeps are cheaper but can take longer, with changes at towns like Jorethang.
Tip: Overnight trains from Kolkata arrive in the morning, which works well — you can reach Pelling by late afternoon.
By air: Bagdogra or Pakyong
Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri has the most flights, including direct connections from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru. From the airport it’s a 5–6 hour drive to Pelling.
Pakyong Airport in Sikkim is closer, but flights are fewer and more weather-dependent. If you do fly into Pakyong, it’s roughly a four-hour drive to Pelling.
If your flight lands in the afternoon, consider a night in Siliguri and an early start the next morning — hill roads are best driven in daylight.
By road from Siliguri
The usual route from Siliguri follows the Teesta river before climbing into Sikkim through towns like Melli, Jorethang and Legship, then up to Gyalshing and Pelling. You can also come via Namchi or Ravangla. Your driver will choose based on road conditions on the day.
- Private taxi: the most comfortable option, with the freedom to stop. Agree the fare and the vehicle type before you start.
- Shared jeep: budget-friendly, leaving from Siliguri’s jeep stands in the morning. Expect a change of vehicle along the way.
- Bus: SNT buses run from Siliguri on some days; check the latest timings locally.
From Gangtok
If you’re combining Gangtok and Pelling, the drive takes around five hours through Singtam and Ravangla or via Rabongla–Legship. Many travellers stop at Ravangla’s Buddha Park on the way — it’s a good place to stretch your legs.
From Darjeeling
Darjeeling to Pelling is the shortest of the common routes on paper, about 75 km, but the roads are winding, so plan for around four hours via Jorethang.
Permits
Indian citizens don’t need a permit to visit Pelling. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (Inner Line Permit) to enter Sikkim, arranged in advance through the official process or a registered travel agent. Some treks in West Sikkim need separate trekking permits.
