Food in Pelling is honest, warming and made for cold mountain evenings. It’s shaped by Sikkim’s Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali communities, with Tibetan influences in almost every kitchen. You won’t find fussy fine dining here — you’ll find steaming bowls, hand-folded dumplings and flavours that make sense at 2,000 metres.

Here’s what to eat in Pelling, and how to find good places to eat.

Pelling’s famous food: dishes you should try

Momos

The unofficial dish of the Himalayas. Steamed or fried dumplings filled with vegetables, cheese, chicken or pork, served with a fiery tomato-chilli chutney and sometimes a clear soup. Every kitchen has its own fold and its own chutney — try more than one.

Thukpa

A hearty noodle soup with vegetables or meat in a warming broth. Perfect after a cold morning at the Skywalk or a misty drive back from Khecheopalri Lake.

Sel roti

A ring-shaped, slightly sweet fried bread made from rice flour, traditionally prepared for festivals. Crisp outside, soft inside, and excellent with tea.

Gundruk

Fermented leafy greens, often cooked into a tangy soup or pickle. It’s one of the most distinctive tastes of Sikkim — sour, earthy and surprisingly addictive.

Phagshapa

A traditional dish of pork cooked with radish and dried chillies — simple, rich and deeply local.

Sha phaley

Tibetan-style bread stuffed with seasoned meat (or vegetables) and fried until golden. A filling snack for road trips.

Chhurpi

A traditional cheese made from yak or cow milk. Soft chhurpi is cooked into curries and soups; the hard version is chewed slowly like a mountain sweet.

Butter tea and local tea

Salty, buttery and warming, butter tea is an acquired taste but worth trying at least once. Sikkim also grows excellent tea — Temi tea is its best known.

How to find good places to eat in Pelling

  • Upper Pelling has the widest choice of cafés and small restaurants, especially around the main market area.
  • Look for busy, local spots for momos and thukpa — high turnover means fresh food.
  • Eat early. Pelling is a small town and many places close by 8–9 pm, especially in the off-season.
  • Ask your hosts. Hotel and homestay staff always know where the best momos are this season.
  • Carry cash for small eateries, though UPI is increasingly common.

Tips for vegetarians

Vegetarian travellers eat very well in Pelling — veg momos, thukpa, dal-bhat, gundruk soup, aloo dum and fresh local greens are easy to find. If you need pure-veg kitchens, ask before ordering. We’ve written more in vegetarian-friendly stays and food in Pelling.

A few food etiquette notes

  • Local chillies can be very hot — ask for “less spicy” if you’re unsure.
  • Try local drinks responsibly; traditional millet beer is strong.
  • Avoid waste and single-use plastic; Sikkim takes its environment seriously.
