Pelling is small, but it sits in the middle of some of Sikkim’s oldest history and most beautiful countryside. You can see the highlights in two days — but the best trips here are slow ones, with time to sit in a monastery courtyard or wait for the clouds to part over Kanchenjunga.

1. Pelling Skywalk and the Chenrezig Statue
Opened in November 2018, the Pelling Skywalk is a glass-floored walkway leading towards a 137-foot statue of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the Buddha of compassion. On a clear day the views across the valley are wide and dramatic.
Tip: Go early in the morning — it’s calmer, the light is softer, and you may get Kanchenjunga in the background. There are steps to climb, so take it slow.
2. Pemayangtse Monastery
Built in 1705 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, Pemayangtse is one of the most important monasteries in Sikkim. Inside, look for the remarkable seven-tiered wooden sculpture depicting the heavenly abode of Guru Rinpoche. The monastery sits on a hilltop with sweeping views.
Tip: Dress modestly, walk clockwise around the prayer wheels, and ask before taking photographs inside.
3. Rabdentse Ruins
Rabdentse was the second capital of the old Kingdom of Sikkim, from 1670 to 1814. Today the ruined palace walls and chortens sit in a peaceful forest, reached by a gentle walk from the road. It’s a lovely place to understand how old this land’s story is.
4. Sanga Choeling Monastery
Founded in 1697, Sanga Choeling is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. It’s reached by a steep uphill walk through forest, which rewards you with quiet, prayer flags and views over Pelling. Allow time and wear good shoes.
5. Khecheopalri Lake — the “wishing lake”
About 34 km from Pelling, this sacred lake is revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike. It’s said that leaves are never allowed to float on its surface — birds pick them up as they fall. Walk quietly along the prayer-flag-lined path, and you’ll understand why people come here to make a wish.
6. Kanchenjunga Falls and Rimbi Waterfall
Kanchenjunga Falls, about 28 km from Pelling, is one of the most striking waterfalls in West Sikkim, especially after the monsoon. Rimbi Waterfall and the Rimbi river are on the same side of the valley, so many travellers combine them with Khecheopalri Lake in one day.
7. Singshore Bridge
Often described as the highest bridge in Sikkim, Singshore stands about 100 metres above the gorge and stretches roughly 240 metres across it. Walking across, with the river far below and forested hills all around, is a small adventure in itself.
8. Yuksom — Sikkim’s first capital
A scenic drive from Pelling takes you to Yuksom, the historic first capital of Sikkim and the starting point for treks towards Dzongri and Goecha La. Even if you’re not trekking, the village and its old monasteries are worth a half-day.
9. Village walks and slow mornings
Some of the best moments in Pelling aren’t on any list: a walk past cardamom fields, children waving on the way to school, tea on your balcony as the range turns pink at sunrise. Leave space for these.
Suggested plan for two days
- Day 1: Sunrise from your room → Pemayangtse Monastery → Rabdentse Ruins → Skywalk in the afternoon → early dinner.
- Day 2: Khecheopalri Lake → Rimbi and Kanchenjunga Falls → back by evening. With more time, add Singshore Bridge or Yuksom on a third day.
